Trauma-Informed Leadership with an Equity Lens

Learning to be trauma-informed can not be done as effectively without exploring equity and how to be more culturally-responsive.  To that end, as educators, we must educate ourselves from the “inside out.”  This interactive, embodied workshop is designed to give district leaders, site leaders, teachers, and support staff the relevant trauma-informed knowledge and trauma-sensitive practices that will help transform their own practices and, therefore, their schools – from the “inside-out.”  The information presented in this workshop will focus on how student learning and behavior is impacted by trauma, how educators and support staff can help students develop a greater sense of safety at school, and how to build new emotional regulation skills. Using educational pedagogy grounded in trauma-informed practices and theory, unique embodiment exercises, and emotional intelligence strategies, participants will discover new capacities to improve their own pedagogy and increase outcomes for teaching and learning. Further, we will explore racialized systemic oppression in our schools, the power of our biases, and white fragility – and how all of this results in policies and practices that are not as supportive of children of color.  Learn classroom and school-wide culture & climate strategies that reflect more equitable, trauma-informed practices to reduce classroom referrals and suspension rates.   All participants – no matter what role in districts and schools – will leave this workshop with specific tools and strategies to implement immediately to improve academic outcomes.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  1. understand the interconnectedness of trauma, social emotional learning, and equity
  2. understand what trauma is and how it impacts our students on cognitive and physiological levels
  3. learn immediate strategies to create trauma-informed schools and classrooms
  4. expand their equity lens and increase cultural-responsiveness
  5. learn resilience-building tools and strategies to use with students
